The Elasto-Gel Hypothermia Mitts were designed for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments. These mitts are intended to protect patients from losing their nails (onycholysis), scarring, odor control, friction and pressure. The mitts should be used 15 minutes before the chemotherapy treatment is initiated and continued use up to 30-40 minutes after therapy is completed. The mitts should be replaced with another pair of cold mitts every 30 minutes throughout the chemo therapy application for best results. Generally, customers will purchase anywhere from 6-8 of the mitt pairs depending on the length of their chemotherapy treatments. Many physician offices have freezers that the mitts can be stored in during therapy, or coolers filled with dry ice can be used as well. Using the mitts will provide continuous vasoconstriction with a reduced blood flow to the nails, leading to a reduction in the quantity of drugs reaching the nails and reducing the chance of nail loss. This means that the drug is present at high concentrations in the capillary circulation for a duration which is shorter than that of hypothermia. The reduction of the cellular uptake of the treatment drugs by the nails may also be attributed to the lower temperature. Some research scientists have concluded that, a reduction in the metabolism of local tissue, in response to low temperature rather than reduced blood flow, is the most significant factor in preventing onycholysis (nail loss).
